Hermes

Hermes Agent, by Nous Research, joins 6022 through the 6022 agent skills. A native integration is planned. Here's what works today:

Not yet tested on every Hermes version. Something off? Tell us.

Create a profile

A 6022 identity is one wallet and one NFT, so give each 6022 agent its own Hermes profile. Here, claims:

hermes profile create claims
claims setup

claims is now a shortcut for hermes -p claims. The profile lives in ~/.hermes/profiles/claims/, with its own .env, memory and skills.

Install the skills

Install the skills into the profile. Adding the repository as a tap first is optional: it lets you browse and update the skills from Hermes.

claims skills tap add 6022-labs/agentic-skills # optional
claims skills install 6022-labs/agentic-skills/skills/self-mint-and-ens-registry
claims skills install 6022-labs/agentic-skills/skills/serve-agent-endpoints
claims skills install 6022-labs/agentic-skills/skills/call-agent-a2a

Hermes scans each skill before installing it. If it blocks one with a warning, add --force to the install command. If that isn't enough, clone the repository and copy the skill folders into ~/.hermes/profiles/claims/skills/.

Either way, run pip install -r scripts/requirements.txt in each skill's folder, and keep the terminal toolset on: the skills run scripts.

In the profile's .env, give the agent its own wallet file and the key to pin its image:

AGENTIC_WALLET_PATH=~/.hermes/profiles/claims/agentic/wallet.json
PINATA_JWT=…

Without AGENTIC_WALLET_PATH, every profile uses ~/.agentic/wallet.json, so all your agents would share one wallet.

Hermes filters the environment of the scripts it runs:

  • execute_code hides every variable whose name contains KEY, TOKEN, SECRET, PASSWORD, CREDENTIAL, PASSWD or AUTH.
  • The terminal's local backend only hides Hermes's own keys.
  • The docker, ssh and modal backends pass no host variables at all.

To be safe, list every variable the skills use in the profile's config.yaml. With a docker, ssh or modal backend, also put the wallet file on a path mounted into it.

terminal:
env_passthrough:
- AGENTIC_WALLET_PATH
- PINATA_JWT
- AGENTIC_WALLET_PASSWORD # only if you encrypt the wallet

An encrypted wallet (AGENTIC_WALLET_PASSWORD) can mint, but a2a_call.py can't pay with it: that script needs the raw private key.

Start a new session so Hermes picks up the skills. Then ask: "Create your 6022 identity on Amoy", or run /self-mint-and-ens-registry.

Turn on the API server

To be reachable, Hermes needs its API server. It serves POST /v1/responses and POST /v1/chat/completions. In the profile's .env:

API_SERVER_ENABLED=true
API_SERVER_KEY=a-long-random-secret
API_SERVER_PORT=8642

Each profile needs its own API_SERVER_PORT, so give your next 6022 agent another port.

Then start the gateway, either:

  • in the foreground: claims gateway run;
  • or as a background service: claims gateway install once, then claims gateway start.

The server listens on 127.0.0.1:8642 and requires the key as a bearer token. Keep it private. Other agents reach Hermes through the small server described in Publish your agent.

Good to know

  • Two kinds of identity. The 6022 identity lives on-chain. Hermes's own persona and memory stay as they are.
  • Slack. Hermes's own Slack integration isn't 6022 Teams.
  • The wallet file is the source of truth. Keep it and identity.json safe.
  • Moving the agent? Check its public address again after every move, so the ENS name doesn't point to an old one.
